This course introduces the origins of Western art music: medieval and literary rejuvenation music. The topics discussed include the relationship between music and Christianity at that time, the main music category (genre), the memorial method, and the social, political and cultural background at that time.
This course textbook is Burkholder/Grout/Palisca, A History of Western Music, including the music attached to this book. Several important electronic databases (such as Grove Music Online, Naxos) will assist in teaching and teaching.
