This course includes three components: 1. Some more typical discussions about modernity in traditional terms - of course, they are conducted in "critical introductions"; 2. Critical discussions on several basic concepts of "social structure" in social science; 3. Re-evaluate this modernity, which is often defined by Western society from a perspective that is more "third world"; and 4. Find out the possibility of a Chinese and third world social thinking from the perspective of intellectual format and thinking mode. At least this course hopes that students can critically and historically understand some key concepts or scopes of social science (such as rationalization, regulation, reflexivity, materialization...), and have a sense of concern for some important global issues since the 20th century (colonialism, globalization, and massacre), so as to think about the global future in a larger scope, and of course, and the future of Taiwan, which everyone is more directly concerned about.
