Emotions in Social life
Course Target
In the field of sociology, the topic of "emotion" has not received considerable attention. Among the existing sociological theories, sociology related to emotions generally include Goffman's interaction theory, sociological research on the body, Hochschild's emotional labor, and themes related to women's emotionality, stigma, shame, or hysteria in feminist research. Facing the increasingly complex modern/postmodern society, what emotional problems do people have today? How to solve it? This course cuts into today's interdisciplinary fields such as sociology and cultural studies to analyze various aspects of emotions. Discussions about emotions seem to be experiences in the private domain, but from a sociological analysis point of view, we will find that private emotions are often related to collective consciousness, political identity, and the public domain. But sometimes, private emotional experience cannot be completely reduced to part of the collective or public domain. What is the relationship between personal emotions and social emotions? How do we move individuals and society toward the ultimate goal of being "happier"? What are the sources of human suffering? This course attempts to analyze this issue from social phenomena, sociology and interdisciplinary perspectives.
This course will be divided into three parts: 1. This course will divide students into four groups to conduct emotion research and surveys. There are four themes: "How can/can't sociology help us face our own emotions? What emotional problems do college students have?" "Emotional problems in academic circles" "Migrant workers and emotional labor" "Parent-child relationships and emotions". The group report will be due at the end of the semester.
2. The sociological topics taught in this course are divided into: A. Gender, culture and emotional politics: How do we "spectate the pain of others"? In an age of mass media and information overflow, how is our understanding of the pain of others part of media intervention? How will "seeing is believing" affect our cognition? B. Emotional labor and labor issues; C. Family upbringing and emotional conflict. D. Explore sociological emotional keywords: trauma (trauma), shame and stigma (shame/stigma), prejudice (prejudice), anger (anger), intimacy (intimacy), addiction (addiction)...
3. Emotions and Indian philosophy: This section will introduce the relationship between "mindfulness" psychology, which has been popular in Western psychology circles in recent years, and Eastern Indian philosophy, and explore how different philosophical systems explain and propose solutions to human suffering.
