這是一門以閱讀影片（劇情片以及紀錄片）為手段，活用社會學概念與理論思維，從而更豐富地理解當代世界的課程。內容涵蓋當代重要社會（學）議題，包括知識與權力、現代都市、階級矛盾與衝突，與當代世界的「人」的狀況。也在課程的後段，透過台灣新電影的兩部重要作品，讓我們認識與反思當代的幾個重要問題，例如殖民、二二八、白色恐怖，與「省籍」等問題。上課的方式是閱讀影片，分組討論，以及任課教師的講述與帶領討論。

本課程的分組很重要，反映在很重比例的共同分數上。課程需要透過分組討論以及各組報告進行。在學期的最後一週，課程安排每一組報告各自所選的一部紀錄片或劇情片，向全班說明這部片子何以讓你們喜歡、覺得重要，並願意與大家分享。

準時出席並專注閱讀影片（不是「看電影」），作下你的筆記，並於課餘作必要的補充與發展。記筆記的目的是培養你觀察與紀錄重點的能力，實際上也供分組討論以及考試準備之用。筆記需記錄於一單獨的筆記簿上，每次上課都要攜帶。

This is a course that uses film reading (drama and documentary) as a means of applying sociological concepts and theoretical thinking to gain a richer understanding of the contemporary world. The content covers important contemporary social (academic) issues, including knowledge and power, modern cities, class contradictions and conflicts, and the status of "human beings" in the contemporary world. Also in the later part of the course, two important works of Taiwanese new cinema allow us to understand and reflect on several important contemporary issues, such as colonization, 228, white terror, and "provincial citizenship." Classes are conducted through video reading, group discussion, and teacher's narration and discussion.

The grouping of this course is important and is reflected in the heavy proportion of common marks. The course needs to be conducted through group discussions and reports by each group. In the last week of the semester, the course arranges for each group to report on a documentary or feature film of their choice, explaining to the class why you like this film, feel it is important, and are willing to share it with everyone.

Attend on time and focus on reading the video (not "watching the movie"), take your notes, and make necessary additions and developments after class. The purpose of taking notes is to cultivate your ability to observe and record key points. It is also used for group discussions and exam preparation. Notes need to be recorded in a separate notebook, which must be brought to each class.
