此一課程在藉由同學們最為熟悉的日常居住出發，用社會科學的角度了解城市居住的形態，更進一步的了解個人居住選擇與群體生活模式以及社會制度的關係，最後透過小組研究、文獻比較等從城市觀察延伸到理論辯證與驗證。課程以分組討論和實際做都市研究為主，全班授課主要在研究議題發想、資料收集方法、描述統計分析與呈現。另外會針對個別小組討論各自感興趣的主題，相關議題的文獻則會透過研究過程中指導同學搜尋方式，讓同學自行探索有興趣的文獻，希望同學透過都觀察記錄城市居住與生態，對城市有新的認知，對都市社會學或都市研究產生進一步的興趣。課堂完成後同學應學會有系統的觀察城市，並對城市研究中涉及都市社會學、都市地理學、都市規劃的部份有進一步的了解。

This course starts from the daily living that students are most familiar with, uses a social science perspective to understand the form of urban living, and further understands the relationship between individual living choices, group living patterns and social systems. Finally, through group research, literature comparison, etc., it extends from urban observation to theoretical dialectics and verification. The course focuses on group discussions and actual urban research. The whole class lectures mainly focus on research topic development, data collection methods, descriptive statistical analysis and presentation. In addition, individual groups will discuss topics of interest to them. Students will be guided in searching for literature on related topics through the research process, allowing students to explore the literature of interest on their own. It is hoped that students will gain a new understanding of cities through observing and recording urban living and ecology, and develop further interest in urban sociology or urban research. After completing the class, students should learn to observe cities systematically and have a better understanding of urban studies involving urban sociology, urban geography, and urban planning.
