Literature, Art and Society

Course Target

1. Course Description
The main purpose of this course is to explore the interactive and dialectical relationship between literature, artistic creation and society.

In Jane Turner, ed., The Dictionary of Art (1996), social history of art is defined as: "A term used to describe a method of studying art history that attempts to identify the various social factors relevant to the emergence and comprehensive understanding of a given artistic phenomenon, whether it is an era, a city, an artist's career, or a work. It is therefore closely linked to the sociology of art."

This course traces and interprets the development and evolution of novels, videos, and other artistic creation types in contemporary Taiwan from the Japanese occupation to the end of the 20th century.
In summary, there have always been two main research directions exploring the relationship between literature, art and society. The first is to examine the social phenomena presented in the content of literary and artistic works ("Looking at society through literary and artistic works"); the second research direction is to explore how the social environment structure affects the production and circulation of works, such as the origin of the creator and his social status, the form of literary and artistic patronage (patronage), the structure of the publishing industry/artistic work managers, the demographic and socioeconomic status of the readers, etc. ("literary and artistic production/consumption studies").
The orientation of this course will adopt a multiple interaction methodological framework to conduct a three-stage cultural analysis of contemporary Taiwanese literature and art: (1) historical contextual interpretation (post-colonial historical perspective) (2) institutional analysis of the literary and art system (how literature and art as "cultural commodities" are produced, transmitted, accepted and evaluated) (3) text analysis (in-depth interpretation of literature and art as "meaning structure"). This course particularly emphasizes the symbiotic and dialectical relationship of "mutual embeddedness and mutual formation" between literature and art and society. It is not that literature and art passively and directly reflect the current social situation, but that the social structure itself actively intervenes in the process of the production and reception of literature and art.

Taking literature as an example (other art categories can be analogized), the outline of this three-stage cultural analysis is roughly as follows: In terms of historical development, Taiwanese literature is nurtured in three important historical axes, one is the history of aborigines, one is the history of immigration, and the other is colonial history. Such a diverse and heterogeneous accumulation of historical experience and collective memory makes the interpretation of Taiwanese literary history like a battlefield of gods where different opposing powers and ideologies compete and wrestle with each other. This course attempts to more broadly embrace and examine the literature developed on the island of Taiwan through a postcolonial literary historical perspective. Historical explanations of literature cannot be constructed apart from the society in which writers and works were nurtured. The evaluation and interpretation of contemporary Taiwanese literary history must therefore be viewed in the context of Taiwan's historical development. As far as the institutional analysis of the literary system is concerned, the "literary system" discussed in this course not only includes specific cultural systems (such as the education system, media, publishing industry, etc.) that affect the production and reception of literary works, but also includes the entire set of literary concepts that have gained legitimacy and are widely accepted in society through the dissemination and circulation of various discourses. The powerful discourse that has achieved hegemony is spread through the operation of institutional power, infiltrating into the entire knowledge system and exerting a powerful and imperceptible control over people's conscious behavior. Therefore, the analysis of the literary system behind the works can help us understand how the competitive relationship between the mainstream moral system, market profit logic, and various discourse systems affects the production and reception of contemporary Taiwanese literary creation. Finally, as far as text analysis is concerned, this course adopts in-depth hermeneutics, emphasizing the exploration and inquiry of meaning, treating the text written by the author as a discourse, and finding out the unfinished deep meanings projected in the text by social, historical and cultural imagination. Through a new understanding, the original meaning of the text is restored, and the ideological and cultural connotations behind the text are reconstructed using sympathy and resonance.

This course does not focus on the instillation of knowledge, but on the training of free, lively, thinking, and counter-argument mental thinking. Students must actually read the assigned readings before class. Give oral presentations in class and actively participate in discussions. During the semester, we will also discuss the literature designated for that week in groups from time to time, and nominate a student to make a summary report for the group. And through the process of multi-party questioning and dialogue by the lecturer, students' thinking ability is trained.
