大學的目標之一是傳授知識與創造知識。創造知識需要一套方法，瞭解社會是創造知識的一個路徑之一，需要一種方法。「社會研究方法」課程的目標是討論介紹社會學研究方法的基本概念與過程，使得學生對量化與質化研究有一定程度的瞭解。研究方法是社會科學追求新知、累積知識的一套工具，研究者透過這一套完整的工具來探索社會的運作規則。然而，社會的議題錯綜複雜，難以套用研究方法，需要因應不同的研究議題，調整研究方法來達到最佳的研究結果。初學者除了學習基本概念與完整的流程，若能經由實際的操作、做中學，比較容易學得如何使用研究方法。
