就近年的國際佛學圈而言，佛教倫理學的研究與討論正方興未艾，除了陸續有相關論題在國際著名的期刊發表之外，近年也有相關議題的國際研討會在北美舉行，其中聚集了佛教哲學、道德哲學、道德心理學、認知科學與社會學……等不同領域的專家學者探討佛教倫理學的議題。
當代的佛教倫理學的論述傾向，多以佛教哲學的內涵逐步展開對應於當代倫理學或應用倫理學的討論，如果這樣的研究與論述路徑具備著相當程度的合法性，我們可以發現，假若要進行佛教倫理學的討論，似乎必須建構在佛教文獻與哲學內涵之基礎上才有可能。
基於這樣的理由，本課程的目標在於引導同學們初步把握佛教文獻與哲學內涵，以之作為建構佛教倫理學理論的基礎，逐步引導同學把握佛教倫理學的核心理論，並反思其中哲學論證與理由。除了深入探究佛教倫理學之外，特別引導同學閱讀若干佛教倫理學重要的學術研究成果，刺激同學深度思考並激發研究興趣。此外，在課堂的歷程中，除了養成學生從文本中把握哲學問題的能力外，也透過課堂討論與論文寫作的訓練，培養學生獨立研究與教學的能力。As far as the international Buddhist circle in recent years is concerned, the research and discussion of Buddhist ethics are in the ascendant.
