(How I Came to Hate Math:2013法國紀錄片)。
(The Man Who Knew Infinity:2016英國電影)、關鍵少數(Hidden Figures:2016美國電影)。
This course analyzes the mathematics used in films in the classroom in the "mathematics, filmmaking" method, so that students can understand how mathematical concepts are used to solve problems in the selected "reasoning" film, feel the comments on mathematics from the perspective of spiritual concern in the "philosophical" film, and understand the stories and contributions of mathematicians from the "Translation" film.
With the increase in the speed of online transmission and the popularization of digital products such as mobile phones and tablets, viewing movies and TV dramas through online platforms has become a common phenomenon, and the story themes and presentation methods are also more diverse. In films such as Europe, the United States, Japan, etc., a large number of works have incorporated mathematical concepts into them, or presented mathematician stories in the form of a cinema. Different from the considerations of teaching videos, viewpoints and box office, these films are very attractive in terms of plot, actors, shooting techniques, etc., and invisibly convey the mathematical concept to the public. However, due to business orientation and length limitations, the mathematical concepts and mathematician contributions are often not fully described and explained.
This course will combine the three major categories of mathematical films (inference, philosophy, and transcription) selected (mathematical films) with the introduction of the plot in a classroom lecture to fully analyze the mathematical concepts and related knowledge, explore the life courses and contributions of mathematical formulas, and analyze the beauty and philosophy behind mathematical formulas. The introduction of the concept will avoid complicated or impurities in calculations and mathematical evidence, but will lead students to appreciate mathematics, so that students can understand the use of mathematics and the beauty of mathematics through film learning, achieving the goal of "propagating mathematics culture and improving mathematical cultivation".
The course is conducted to introduce the film names and contents that teachers will discuss the previous week. Students can first watch through library multimedia data, online video system, online platform and other pipelines before class (please abide by the relevant regulations of smart property rights for your business). In the class, the main focus is on analyzing mathematical concepts, methods, and applications in the film, and supplementing the insufficient description of mathematical knowledge or mathematician contributions in the film. When necessary, important relevant clips in the film will be used. The selected film databases are classified as follows (due to course time limitations, all listed films cannot be explored, and films that cannot be described in the classroom can be used as topics for book reporting):
1. Reasoning films: Fermate’s Room (Fermate’s Room: 2007 Spanish Movie), Mathematical Girl’s Love Event Book (2013 Japanese TV Drama, 8 episodes in total), Suspect X Appearance (2008 Japanese Movie), Digital Search Line (Numb3rs: 2005-2010 American TV Drama, 6 seasons in total).
2. Philosophical films: Good Will Hunting (Good Will Hunting: 1997 American movie), PhD's favorite formula (2006 Japanese movie), X+Y love equation (X+Y: 2014 British movie), and Mathematics embarrassing (How I Came to Hate Math: 2013 French record).
3. Recording films: A Beautiful Mind: 2001 American movies), A Beautiful Woman (Agora: 2009 Spanish movies), Measuring the World (Measuring The World: 2013 German movies), The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016 British movies), The number of key points (Hidden Figures: 2016 American movies).
Course rating methods include: midterm exam and final exam (including class lectures, basic mathematical concepts and knowledge related to film), book report (the content can be: mathematical film reviews, mathematical report, or mathematical micro-film, etc.), and daily performance (including attendance status, class presentation, learning orders and experience reviews, etc.).
