教育目標 Course Target

本課程以『數學為主,影劇為輔』的方式,在課堂上解析影劇中使用的數學,使同學瞭解數學概念在所選擇的『推理類』影劇中是如何被用來解決問題,在『哲理類』影劇中感受從心靈關懷的角度對數學的詮釋,並從『傳記類』影劇中認識數學家的故事與貢獻。

隨著網路傳輸速度的提升與手機、平板電腦等數位產品的普及,透過網路平台觀賞電影與電視劇已成為普遍的現象,其中的故事題材與呈現方式也更加多元。在歐洲、美國、日本等的影劇中已有為數不少的作品將數學概念融入其中,或是將數學家的故事以傳記電影方式呈現。有別於教學影片以及收視率與票房的考量,這些影劇在劇情、演員、拍攝手法等等方面有較大的吸引力,無形中將數學概念傳遞給普羅大眾。然而,也由於商業取向以及片長限制,其中的數學概念與數學家的貢獻常常無法完整地闡述與說明。

本課程將從所選擇的三大類別(推理類、哲理類、與傳記類)數學影劇中,搭配劇情的介紹以課堂講述的方式,較為完整地解析其中的數學概念與相關知識,探究數學家的人生歷程與貢獻,以及賞析數學公式背後的美感與蘊含的哲理。概念的介紹將避免繁複或艱澀的計算與數學證明,而是引領同學欣賞數學,使同學透過影劇學習並瞭解數學之用與數學之美,達到『傳播數學文化、提升數學素養』的目標。

課程進行的方式為教師於前一週指定隔週將討論的影劇名稱與內容介紹,同學於上課前可透過圖書館多媒體資料、線上隨選視訊系統、網路平台等管道先行觀賞(務請遵守智慧財產權相關規定)。課堂上則以解析影劇中的數學概念、方法、應用,以及補充影劇中對於數學知識或數學家的貢獻描述不足之處為主,必要時會輔以影片中重要相關片段。目前挑選的影劇資料庫分類如下(因課程時間限制,無法探討所有列出之影劇,未能於課堂講述的影劇可作為書面報告的題材):

一、推理類影劇:費馬的房間(Fermate’s Room:2007西班牙電影)、數學女孩的戀愛事件簿(2013日本電視劇,共八集)、嫌疑犯X現身(2008日本電影)、數字搜查線(Numb3rs:2005-2010美國電視劇,共六季)。

二、哲理類影劇:心靈捕手(Good Will Hunting:1997美國電影)、博士熱愛的算式(2006日本電影)、X+Y愛的方程式(X+Y:2014英國電影)、數學囧很大(How I Came to Hate Math:2013法國紀錄片)。

三、傳記類影劇:美麗境界(A Beautiful Mind:2001美國電影)、風暴佳人(Agora:2009西班牙電影)、丈量世界(Measuring The World:2013德國電影)、天才無限家(The Man Who Knew Infinity:2016英國電影)、關鍵少數(Hidden Figures:2016美國電影)。

課程評分方式包括:期中考與期末考(涵蓋課堂講述,與影劇相關的基本數學概念與知識)、書面報告(內容可為:數學影劇評述、數學報導、或數學微電影等)、與平時成績(包含出席狀況、課堂發表、學習單與心得回饋單等等)。

This course uses the method of "mathematics as the main part, with film and drama as a supplement" to analyze the mathematics used in film and television dramas in class, so that students can understand how mathematical concepts are used to solve problems in the selected "reasoning" film and television dramas, experience the interpretation of mathematics from the perspective of spiritual care in the "philosophical" film and television dramas, and understand the stories and contributions of mathematicians from the "biographical" film and television dramas.

With the improvement of network transmission speed and the popularization of digital products such as mobile phones and tablets, watching movies and TV series through online platforms has become a common phenomenon, and the story themes and presentation methods have become more diverse. There are many works in European, American, Japanese and other film and television dramas that incorporate mathematical concepts into them, or present the stories of mathematicians in the form of biographical films. Different from educational films and considerations of ratings and box office, these movies and dramas are more attractive in terms of plots, actors, shooting techniques, etc., and they can invisibly convey mathematical concepts to the general public. However, due to commercial orientation and film length restrictions, the mathematical concepts and contributions of mathematicians often cannot be fully explained and explained.

This course will use the selected three major categories of mathematical dramas (reasoning, philosophy, and biography), and introduce the plot in the form of classroom narration to more completely analyze the mathematical concepts and related knowledge, explore the life course and contributions of mathematicians, and appreciate the beauty and philosophy behind mathematical formulas. The introduction of concepts will avoid complicated or difficult calculations and mathematical proofs, but lead students to appreciate mathematics, so that students can learn and understand the use and beauty of mathematics through film and television dramas, achieving the goal of "spreading mathematical culture and improving mathematical literacy."

The course is conducted in such a way that the teacher specifies the title and content of the movie and TV series to be discussed the following week in the previous week. Students can watch them through the library's multimedia materials, online on-demand video systems, Internet platforms and other channels before class (please abide by the relevant regulations on intellectual property rights). The class will focus on analyzing the mathematical concepts, methods, and applications in the film and television drama, as well as supplementing the deficiencies in the description of mathematical knowledge or the contributions of mathematicians in the film and television drama. When necessary, important relevant clips from the film will be supplemented. The currently selected film and television databases are classified as follows (due to course time constraints, it is not possible to discuss all the film and television dramas listed, and the film and television dramas that cannot be discussed in class can be used as the subject of written reports):

1. Mystery movies and TV series: Fermate’s Room (2007 Spanish movie), Math Girl’s Love Affair (2013 Japanese TV series, eight episodes in total), Suspect X Appears (2008 Japanese movie), Numb3rs (2005-2010 American TV series, six seasons in total).

2. Philosophical dramas: Good Will Hunting (1997 American film), The Doctor’s Love Equation (2006 Japanese film), X+Y Love Equation (X+Y: 2014 British film), How I Came to Hate Math (2013 French documentary).

3. Biographical dramas: A Beautiful Mind (2001 American film), Agora (2009 Spanish film), Measuring The World (2013 German film), The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016 British film), Hidden Figures (2016 American film).

Course grading methods include: mid-term and final exams (covering class presentations, basic mathematical concepts and knowledge related to movies and dramas), written reports (the content can be: mathematical movie and drama reviews, mathematical reports, or mathematical micro-films, etc.), and daily results (including attendance status, class presentations, study sheets, and feedback sheets, etc.).
