Taught in English

A Critical-Historical view on Worldwide Context and Local

Course Target

The first requirement of the course is to read the course syllabus carefully and keep it properly throughout the semester.

As the name suggests, the purpose of the course is to "turn over" thinking and cognition. The scope of shaking includes common sense, knowledge, and knowledge methods in daily life. In education based on examinations and entrance exams, it is easy to develop low-level logic of binary thinking of "right" and "wrong", "XXX is right, wrong is ○○", "XX is wrong, ○○ is right", which seems to be making judgments, but in fact it says nothing. In addition to neglecting to explore the occurrence of things and being unable to get close to the origin of phenomena, people also lose the ability to think independently due to lack of deep thought. We must not only abandon duality and refuse to "memorize things by heart", but we must also train to think in terms of "relationships" and expose the true cause and effect behind the superficial causes. Only by training yourself to discover and admit your shortcomings and little knowledge can you avoid constantly stuffing unfamiliar things into your cognitive framework and thinking that you know everything.

Constantly discover the unknown, try to face, understand, and explain the unknown. But is it possible to re-understand the world? How to re-establish awareness? The purpose of the course is not to train a "student" who knows many theories and concepts, nor to create another standard answer. It is about discovering that even common sense may hide many hidden manipulations; even "knowledge" is not taken for granted, but needs to be returned to the context and problematized (taken as a matter to be solved, not as a matter of course). If knowledge and common sense may be inherently political, how can they be objective? The course will respond to the actual historical process, reflect on the current common thinking, and respond to various phenomena around us. However, history is not just for memorization and examination. "History" is not something in the past that has nothing to do with me. We must understand through history why today is today? Understand how various concepts, ideologies, attitudes, and thoughts are condensed in our bodies through a series of "relationships".

In order to effectively confirm ideas, there will be a lot of discussions in class; the purpose is not for personal subjective opinions and debates, or to criticize or condemn others, but to be aware of one's own shortcomings through expression. The course will rely on stories, movies, and documentaries, starting with introspection through in-depth description and re-reading of details. The course includes two lecture notes and two semester assignments, which test the expressive and reflective abilities of the course-takers, rather than the emphasis on one's own concepts like high school essays. We expect course participants to experience their own doubts and incomprehensions during reading and writing; lecturers also detect and correct course participants' performance. The ultimate goal of shaking oneself is still to return to the surrounding life, self-reflection, and reflection on interpersonal and various relationships. In a word: flip the definition, reconstruct the possible path of speculation, try to re-understand "reality", and think about the connection between "history" and "today", only then can we actively think about the future.

In a difficult situation without the support of departmental resources, classes are started at a low "hourly wage" with the Ministry of Education's tacit approval of the "decoupling of public and private school salaries", but conscientious undertakings can be publicly criticized. Since teachers do not hesitate to spend money, labor and emotional labor, and have no complaints or regrets, the requirements will also be strict. Please be particularly careful and do not try without sincerity. (2018/1/1)
