Course Target

This course will understand Fu Ke's theory and thoughts by reading the national doctoral thesis: "A Crazy History of the Classical Age" published by Michel Foucault in 1961. According to Fu Ke's positioning of his works in his later years: "There are three areas of research on the subject of reproduction. First, our own historical discussions are related to truth. Through it, we will build ourselves as the subject of knowledge; Second, our own historical discussions are related to power. Through it, we will build ourselves as the subject of action that acts on others; Third, our own historical discussions are related to ethics. Through it, we will build ourselves as moral agents. Therefore, there may be these three axial lines in the Department of Reason. In "The Crazy History of Classical Age", three axial lines appear at the same time, although some are difficult to distinguish. The Truth axis can be seen in "The Genetics of Clinical Medicine" and "Lemence and Things". "Regulations and Punishment" studies the power axis. "History of Sex" focuses on the ethical axis." From this we can see that in "The Crazy History of Classical Age", the topics such as knowledge, power, and subject that will be paid attention to in different periods in the future. In addition, as Fu Ke himself said, this book is neither a scientific history of psychiatric illness nor a history of madman himself (because madman is the absence of an œuvre, madman cannot describe his own history), but a history of limits: Fu Ke examines how madman is divided, excluded, and forgets all of this for rationality. This is a "society segregation structure and exclusion structure", that is, a social historical structure that plans boundaries and sets boundaries by power and knowledge. This is the real object of what it calls "silent archaeology". Therefore, in a strict sense, Fu Ke did not study madness, but how the boundary between madness and reason, or irrationality and reason is formed in a specific historical social time and space. Therefore, this course positiones it as an investigation of historical society and also a study of civilization history, and can be compared with works such as Sigmund Freud's "The Distress of Civilization", Herber Marcuse's "Love and Civilization", and Norbert Elias's "The Process of Civilization". In the course, in addition to focusing on introducing all course participants, learning and savoring the reading of classic works, this course will also introduce other works and social theory views at the appropriate time to provide course participants with more understanding of Fu Ke.
