本課程的目的在於使大一新生能夠廣泛的瞭解生物學的知識，本課程之教材為Campbell 所著的原文書，其目的在於使大一的同學能夠熟習並瞭解許多生物學上的英文用語，希望透過本課程的學習能夠使大一新生具有相當的基礎來閱讀並學習以英文書寫的生物學知識。

The purpose of this course is to enable freshmen to have a broad understanding of biological knowledge. The textbook of this course is the original text written by Campbell. The purpose is to enable freshmen to become familiar with and understand many English terms in biology. It is hoped that through the study of this course, freshmen will have a considerable foundation to read and learn biological knowledge written in English.

藉講演、視聽教材、野外觀察與實習，使學生對植物的結構,生理調節, 微生物及台灣生物多樣性有初步之認識。此課程開設之目的，在使所有生物系之學生，不論其未來學術興趣是分子生物、遺傳工程、生態保育或甚至是跨學科之領域，皆能因對生物之多樣性有充分認識，而能對生命現象有完整的認知。藉對地球上現生物種大尺度的掌握，而能中肯的了解生命現象，不會只將對生命之了解或認知侷限於分子或物理化學層次之間，過渡簡約化對生命之認知，以致自我限制了將來的發展。

Through lectures, audio-visual teaching materials, field observations and internships, students will have a preliminary understanding of plant structure, physiological regulation, microorganisms and Taiwan's biological diversity. The purpose of this course is to enable all biology students, regardless of their future academic interests in molecular biology, genetic engineering, ecological conservation, or even interdisciplinary fields, to have a full understanding of biological diversity and a complete understanding of life phenomena. By grasping the large-scale of existing species on earth, we can gain a pertinent understanding of life phenomena. We will not only limit our understanding or cognition of life to the molecular or physical and chemical levels, but oversimplify our understanding of life, thus limiting future development.
