佛洛伊德(Sigmund Freud)出版於19世紀與20世紀之交的《夢的解析》,揭露了「潛意識」的存在,衝擊了啟蒙與現代性的理性根基。作為時代的思想巨人與精神分析的開山祖師,他的人格與學說,皆曾引起高度爭議。「有人認為他是創造現代心靈的天才、創建者、大師、巨人,但另一種聲音卻說他是獨裁者、剽竊者、說謊家、無與倫比的蒙古大夫。」儘管褒貶不一,但其學說的洞見與影響,卻無可置疑,亦難以迴避,廣泛地滲透到哲學與人文社會科學的各領域中,也包含社會學。

在本學期的課程中,我們希望聚焦的是佛洛伊德對於法蘭克福學派的理論影響。在法蘭克福學派第一代成員中,霍克海默(Max Horkheimer)、阿多諾(Theodor W. Adorno)、馬庫色(Herbert Marcuse)、佛洛姆(Erich Fromm)等人,皆曾明顯地或隱匿地受惠於佛洛伊德學說、對其有所批判,並試圖搭建佛洛伊德學說與馬克思主義的理論對話。前述努力,尤其展現在他們對本能、人格理論(本我、自我、超我)、群體心理學、文明理論的解讀、挪用與改造。承此,本學期的課程安排將分成兩個部分,第一部分是選讀佛洛伊德關於本能、人格、群體心理與文明理論的文章,第二部分則研讀法蘭克福學派的相關著作。希望透過取徑佛洛伊德學說,讓我們更能深入掌握法蘭克福學派的思想。

Sigmund Freud's "The Interpretation of Dreams", published at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, revealed the existence of the "subconscious" and impacted the rational foundation of enlightenment and modernity. As a giant of thought of the era and the founder of psychoanalysis, his personality and theories have aroused high controversy. "Some people think that he is a genius, founder, master, and giant who created the modern mind, but another voice says that he is a dictator, a plagiarist, a liar, and an unparalleled Mongolian doctor." Although there are mixed reviews, the insights and influence of his doctrine are unquestionable and unavoidable. They have widely penetrated into various fields of philosophy and humanities and social sciences, including sociology.

In this semester's course, we hope to focus on Freud's theoretical influence on the Frankfurt School. Among the first generation members of the Frankfurt School, Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm and others were all obviously or covertly indebted to Freudian theory, criticized it, and attempted to establish a theoretical dialogue between Freudian theory and Marxism. The above-mentioned efforts are especially reflected in their interpretation, appropriation and transformation of instinct, personality theory (id, ego, superego), group psychology, and civilization theory. With this in mind, this semester's course schedule will be divided into two parts. The first part is to read Freud's articles on instinct, personality, group psychology and civilization theory, and the second part is to study relevant works of the Frankfurt School. We hope that by taking Freud’s approach to the subject, we can gain a deeper understanding of the Frankfurt School’s ideas.
