現代主義的思潮在二十世紀對建築設計, 工業產品設計與美術設計產生革命性的影響, 這思潮於二戰後在美國隨著經濟快速發展成為當代設計的主流。
受教於現代主義導師葛羅培斯( Walter Gropius)與建築大師布魯意(Marcel Breuer)的貝聿銘( I M. Pei), 無疑是一位堅定地追求並完善現代主義精神最重要的建築師之一。 他在麻省理工學院與哈佛設計學院以非常優異的成績畢業不久, 便進入紐約齊肯道夫的房地產公司下負責建築設計部門。 這樣一開始就進入房地產公司的建築師經歷,使許多國際建築評論家與現代建築論述的學者認定他的建築作品偏商業化, 很少將他的作品拿來評論與推介, 他努力不懈的完成許多不同挑戰的作品不但被業主推崇也被建築同業界讚美, 而貝聿銘也很少發表文章去講述他的作品與設計理論讓國際建築評論者去認定. 因他認為每一件作品本身背後的對設計構想貫徹執行努力與對品質建築空間與工程品質的堅持要求就足以說明他的設計思維。歷經現代建築思潮被議貶, 後現代建築與解構建築思潮的起落,晚現代主義的再被討論與新的數位構築思潮方興未艾, 回首看貝聿銘近年的作品,越顯得其優雅與洗鍊。
本課程依年代順序挑選出具有代表性的貝聿銘建築作品講述並探討他如何在不同的地區尋求每一棟建築的地域獨特性, 整體藝術性與構成完美性, 與他自始至終一以貫之對建築工藝推展與美的追求的初心。
本課程將同時邀請曾在貝聿銘建築師事務所工作的黃承令教授,黃明威建築師與無有主持人劉冠宏先生蒞課闡述部分建築作品與分享在其事務所的工作經驗。

The modernist trend of thought had a revolutionary impact on architectural design, industrial product design and art design in the 20th century. This trend of thought became the mainstream of contemporary design in the United States after World War II with the rapid economic development.
I.M. Pei, who was educated by the modernist mentor Walter Gropius and the architectural master Marcel Breuer, is undoubtedly one of the most important architects who firmly pursues and perfects the spirit of modernism. Shortly after graduating with honors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard School of Design, he joined the architectural design department of Zickendorff's real estate company in New York. Such an experience as an architect who entered a real estate company from the beginning has led many international architectural critics and scholars of modern architecture to believe that his architectural works are commercial-oriented, and his works are rarely reviewed and promoted. His unremitting efforts to complete many works with different challenges are not only praised by owners but also praised by the architectural industry. I.M. Pei rarely publishes articles describing his works and design theories for international architectural critics to identify. Because he believes that the efforts to implement the design concept and the insistence on quality architectural space and engineering quality behind each work are enough to illustrate his design thinking. After modern architectural trends have been discussed and demoted, post-modern architecture and deconstructive architectural trends have risen and fallen, late modernism has been discussed again and new digital construction trends are in the ascendant. Looking back at I.M. Pei’s recent works, they are even more elegant and refreshing.

Pei in chronological order to describe and explore how he sought the regional uniqueness, overall artistry and compositional perfection of each building in different regions, as well as his consistent original intention to promote architectural craftsmanship and pursue beauty from beginning to end.
