This course introduces Western art music at its earliest stages, namely, music in the medieval period and Renaissance. We will study music in relation to Christianity, major music genres, forms, and notations in these eras, as well as the social, religious, and political contexts, in which music was created, performed, and interpreted.
Major reading and listening assignments come from our textbook, Burkholder/Grout/Palisca, A History of Western Music and the accompanying anthologies of scores. Such music resources as Grove Music Online and Naxos will supplement the CD recordings mentioned above. Additional sources such as optional readings and complementary course materials can be accessed on the course website via E-Learning.
This course introduces the origins of Western art music: medieval and literary rejuvenation music. The topics discussed include the relationship between music and Christianity at that time, the main music category (genre), the memorial method, and the social, political and cultural background at that time.
This course textbook is Burkholder/Grout/Palisca, A History of Western Music, including the music attached to this book. Several important electronic databases (such as Grove Music Online, Naxos) will assist in teaching and teaching. Course supplementary textbooks can be found on the new version of the digital teaching platform.
