Taught in English

Historical Sociology

Course Target

The relationship between sociology and history was once so close. When reading the works of the three classical masters of sociology, it is difficult for us to distinguish whether we are reading works of history? Or a work of sociology? However, with the research paradigm headed by positivism and the process of institutionalization of social science disciplines, sociology and history have gradually drifted away. Instead, as Fernand Braudel said: "The dialogue between history and sociology is a dialogue between two deaf people." (Braudel, 1980)

In their later years, many scholars firmly believed that sociology and history would be able to build a bridge across borders and rediscover the energy generated when history and society meet. C. Wright Mills pointed out that without the integration of "history" and "biography", without understanding how macro-social processes integrate personal experience and family experience, and how to give them meaning, it is almost impossible for us to understand the relationship between human beings. Therefore, exploring how history and society intersect at the level of life, with different elaborations and explanations, has become a focus of this course.

The course arrangement will follow the evolution of the Almanac School and serve as the main focus of classes this semester. The course is compared with the research methods, historical views and texts of each scholar to see how scholars conduct analysis and inquiry in different aspects of life. We hope that reading these texts can enrich our historical imagination in terms of methods and themes.
