This course shall equip the attendants with competences and skills in applied ethical discourses. This includes a general introduction to discourse ethics as elaborated by Jürgen Habermas, Karl-Otto Apel and others, an overview of ethical argumentation strategies based on well-established ethical theories and principles, and a profound practice in real-life discourse situations in the various arenas of applied ethics such as medical ethics, bioethics, environmental ethics, profession ethics, science and technology ethics, business ethics, political ethics, etc. The goal of the course is not so much the delivery of theoretical knowledge in the field of ethics, but rather a practical competence in ethical reasoning, argumentation, evaluation and solution-finding for the various discourse situations that the course attendants will face in their future job. Contemporary professional responsibilities include the formulation and conviction of ethical and moral viewpoints that are contested by other's decisions and beliefs. Typical discourse situations arise in hospitals and doctor-patient-relationships, in corporate and business decision-making, in policy debates, in scientific and technological development, all of them to a growing extent also on the global level. Withstanding argumentative pressure, standing their ground concerning their moral convictions, identifying argumentative patterns and flaws, moderating ethically laden debates, and facilitating fruitful discussion results, are useful and important skills that the students will learn in this course for their future professions and their responsibilities as social actors. This course shall equip the attendants with competences and skills in applied ethical discussions.
