This course is the first encounter with Literature for most of you entering the department. In the fall semester of the second year you will be reading drama and will be introduced to aspects of dramatic texts. You will learn about these elements of literature by reading plays from different historical periods. Another important and ambitious goal of this class is that you will enjoy reading literature as well as learn to understand yourself and the world around you better. You will also engage in performing scenes from the plays read over the semester. Active participation is essential to the success of this class.
