一、培養學生的英文閱讀（視讀理解與口讀發音）習慣與能力。
二、培養學生進行文學研究與論文寫作在方法學上的能力。
三、培養學生對國際漢學的認識。
四、培養學生在所感興趣研究領域中搜尋、閱讀相關漢學文獻的能力。
五、培養學生在漢學會議中所需的基本英文聽力與口頭報告的能力。
由於此課程為中文研究所碩士班唯一必修課程，因此授課內容由三部分所組成，第一部份為介紹西方學術界文學領域的研究方法與研究資源，使學生開始習慣閱讀及口讀英文資料。第二部分為國際漢學文獻摘要及論文的研讀。第三部份為基本聽力與口頭報告的的訓練。本課程所研讀資料皆為以英文所撰寫。每週上課資料每位同學皆須事先閱讀，在課堂上隨機分段負責口讀與翻譯，期藉此養成學生閱讀英文文獻的習慣與能力。第一學期已完成研究方法與論文撰寫的分項介紹，並開始研讀學術論文英文摘要。第二學期將繼續研讀以英文所撰寫的摘要及漢學領域學術論文，同時訓練同學在漢學會議中基本英文聽力與口頭報告的能力。

5. Cultivate students’ basic English listening and oral presentation abilities required in Sinology conferences.
Since this course is the only compulsory course for the master's program of the Institute of Chinese Studies, the teaching content consists of three parts. The first part introduces the research methods and research resources in the field of literature in Western academia, so that students can become accustomed to reading and oral reading of English materials. The second part is the study of international sinology literature abstracts and papers. The third part is basic listening and oral reporting training. The study materials in this course are all written in English. Each student must read the weekly class materials in advance and be responsible for oral reading and translation in random sections during the class, in order to develop students' habits and abilities in reading English literature. In the first semester, students have completed the introduction to research methods and paper writing, and have begun to study English abstracts of academic papers. In the second semester, students will continue to study abstracts written in English and academic papers in the field of Sinology, and at the same time train students' basic English listening and oral presentation skills in Sinology conferences.
