By the end of the course, students will demonstrate improvements in their pronunciation of American English. They will show increased awareness of the differences between accurate and less than accurate pronunciations, in terms of word and sentence stress, intonation, consonants and vowels. They will also be able to pronounce consonants and vowels of English sounds which are particularly troublesome for Chinese learners with increased accuracy.This course offers extensive practice so that students can carry key pronunciation patterns over to interaction and communication with others. The emphases of the course are on the sounds that are central to intelligibility and sounds that are challenging for most speakers of Chinese. The course leads students to discover, recognize, pronounce and comprehend American English word stress, sentence stress, intonation patterns, and high-frequency vowels and consonants with increased accuracy. It offers extensive listening and speaking practice so that students can carry key pronunciation patterns over to listening and speaking American English in different contexts.
