課程簡介:食物做為一個媒介 (暫行版本)
食物是生活中最平常不過的事物,但食物的背後有許多社會學的概念與實作:從農場到餐桌,這趟食物之旅有太多可以討論的社會學議題。以食物做為一個媒介,我們可以深入探究糧食生產與消費的種種社會現象、農糧體系的轉變、農業與生態環境的關係、農業活動與人類社區的連結等課題。從另一個角度來看,食物的選擇與準備深深受到文化與社會因素的影響,我們的飲食習慣與傳承很難說是僅受個人喜好支配,而忽略社會、歷史、地理、經濟等種種脈絡因素的刻劃。
因此,食物做為一個載體,可以讓我們去思考、去想像許多社會科學家深感興趣的概念或問題。此外,對修習這門課的大一新鮮人而言,從食物-一項最普通常見的物品-開始,是否比較容易、具體地去思考社會學的意義?
在這門課中,我們想問:
你今天要吃什麼?你吃的食物從哪裡來?它如何到達你的餐桌?誰替你準備這些食物?食物的選擇真的完全是個人喜好,不受其他社會或文化因素的影響?
若我們能夠找出這些問題的答案,你會發現,我們對糧食的生產、運輸、準備及消費其實所知甚少,而環繞著這些活動的種種社會與文化關係,正是這門課所要討論的主題。

Course Introduction: Food as a Medium (Provisional Version)
Food is the most common thing in life, but there are many sociological concepts and practices behind food: from farm to table, there are too many sociological issues that can be discussed on this food journey. Using food as a medium, we can delve into various social phenomena of food production and consumption, the transformation of the agricultural and food system, the relationship between agriculture and the ecological environment, and the connection between agricultural activities and human communities. From another perspective, food selection and preparation are deeply influenced by cultural and social factors. It is difficult to say that our eating habits and inheritance are only governed by personal preferences, while ignoring social, historical, geographical, economic and other contextual factors.
Therefore, food serves as a vehicle that allows us to think and imagine many concepts or issues that social scientists are deeply interested in. In addition, for freshmen taking this course, is it easier and more concrete to think about the meaning of sociology starting from food, one of the most common items?
In this class we want to ask:
What are you going to eat today? Where does the food you eat come from? How does it get to your table? Who prepares this food for you? Are food choices really a matter of personal preference, uninfluenced by other social or cultural factors?
If we can find the answers to these questions, you will find that we actually know very little about the production, transportation, preparation and consumption of food, and the various social and cultural relationships surrounding these activities are the subject of this course.
