『為什麼會有富士康這種發生員工連續跳樓自殺的工廠呢?』
『你們這些名嘴,怎麼能夠那麼確定,富士康絕對不是血汗工廠呢?』
這是本課程背後試著想要去理解的深層疑問與動力所在。2010年夏天,富士康深圳廠區發生工人連續跳樓自殺事件,之後,台灣的社會科學界學者,發起了「終結血汗工廠,捍衛勞動人權」的連署活動 ,因為在記者會上一句「台灣之恥」,引起了軒然大波,在此不多贅述。授課者位於此風暴的核心,在一連串接受媒體採訪、上call in節目與名嘴對話、與一大早打電話找上門謾罵的民眾溝通、回應眾多的email、收到恐嚇電話和一堆寄到學校的人身攻擊信之後,授課者體會到一種「不應該批評富士康(或郭台銘)」的心態,而這種心態,某個程度深深地嵌入台灣社會的深層,它似乎成為一條敏感的神經,在這個「全民拚經濟」以及期待「鮭魚返鄉」的時刻,被認為不應該輕易挑起。
富士康,是身處資本主義全球化漩渦當中,台灣社會一個充滿張力矛盾的東西,它是大企業,是台商,是權力,授課者認為,它也是血汗工廠(sweatshop)。富士康現象,某個程度可以被理解為「血汗工廠現象」,作為一個代工王國以及資本主義的半邊陲手肘,「台灣社會如何面對台商血汗工廠呢?」,授課者認為,對台灣社會寄予這樣的反身性期待,是有進步意義的,但是其社會過程並不簡單。這個課程,是這「反身性計畫」的一部分,要面對「血汗工廠現象」,必須要理解「血汗工廠結構」。我們生活所需的商品,相當程度都和「血汗工廠結構」脫不了關係,哀鳳手機只是其中一個例子,其他像衣服、鞋子、玩具、電腦、日用品等等,族繁不及備載。
藉著大學所賦予的自由學術空間,本課程將有系統地引介經濟社會學、經濟地理學、勞動社會學、政治經濟學與新社會運動等理論視角,來對資本主義全球化過程中的血汗工廠歷史形構、其政治經濟與社會矛盾、反血汗工廠的社會/文化實踐與社會基礎,進行深入的探討,以作為課堂參與者未來知識實踐的基礎。我們也將邀請台-中-港的反血汗工廠運動組織者,至課堂上進行演講、對談,並規劃戶外教學。
"Why can't we criticize Foxconn?"
"Why are there factories like Foxconn where employees commit suicide by jumping off buildings one after another?"
"How can you celebrities be so sure that Foxconn is definitely not a sweatshop?"
This is the deep question and motivation behind this course that we are trying to understand. In the summer of 2010, a series of workers committed suicide by jumping off buildings at Foxconn's Shenzhen factory. After that, social science scholars in Taiwan launched a signature campaign to "end sweatshops and defend labor rights." Because they said "Taiwan's shame" at a press conference, it caused an uproar. I won't go into details here. The lecturer is at the center of this storm. He has been interviewed by the media and called on After talking to famous speakers on the in program, communicating with people who called and insulted them early in the morning, responding to numerous emails, receiving threatening calls and a bunch of personal attack letters sent to the school, the lecturer realized that "Foxconn (or Terry Gou) should not be criticized" mentality, and this mentality is deeply embedded in the depths of Taiwanese society to a certain extent. It seems to have become a sensitive nerve. In this moment when "all people are fighting for the economy" and looking forward to "the salmon returning home", it is considered not to be easily provoked.
Foxconn is in the whirlpool of capitalist globalization, a thing full of tension and contradiction in Taiwanese society. It is a large enterprise, a Taiwanese businessman, and a power. The lecturer believes that it is also a sweatshop. The Foxconn phenomenon can be understood to a certain extent as the "sweatshop phenomenon." As an OEM kingdom and a half-frontier elbow of capitalism, "How does Taiwanese society deal with Taiwanese businessmen's sweatshops?" The lecturer believes that placing such reflexive expectations on Taiwanese society is progressive, but the social process is not simple. This course is part of this "reflexive project". To face the "sweatshop phenomenon", we must understand the "sweatshop structure". The commodities we need in daily life are closely related to the "sweatshop structure". Aifeng mobile phone is just one example. Others, such as clothes, shoes, toys, computers, daily necessities, etc., cannot be stocked.
With the free academic space provided by the university, this course will systematically introduce theoretical perspectives such as economic sociology, economic geography, labor sociology, political economics and new social movements to conduct in-depth discussions on the historical formation of sweatshops in the process of capitalist globalization, its political economy and social contradictions, and the social/cultural practices and social foundations of anti-sweatshops, so as to serve as the basis for the future knowledge practice of classroom participants. We will also invite organizers of the anti-sweatshop movement in Taichung, China, and Hong Kong to give lectures, dialogues, and plan outdoor teaching in the classroom.
