『Why can't Foxconn be criticized?』
"Why are there factories like Foxconn, where employees jumped off the floor and killed themselves?"
"How can you be so sure that Foxconn is not a sweatshop manufacturer?"
This is the deep-seated questions and motivation that I want to understand behind this course. In the summer of 2010, workers jumped to the floor and killed themselves in the Shenzhen factory area. Afterwards, Taiwanese social science scholars launched a "final sweatshop factory to defend the right to mobilize people" because the reporter's sentence "The Evil in Taiwan" caused a huge uproar. I won't remark it here. The instructor is at the heart of this storm, receiving media access and calling After in-programs talking to famous speakers, talking to people who call early in the morning, responding to a lot of emails, receiving a terrifying phone call and a bunch of personal attack messages sent to the school, the subjects will receive a "no criticism of Foxconn (or Guo Tai-chan's attitude, and this attitude, which is deeply embedded in the depth of Taiwan's society, seems to have become a sensitive nerve. At this moment of "national economic struggle" and expectation of "fish return to the country", it is believed that it should not be easily provoked.
Foxconn is a thing that is full of conflicts in Taiwan’s society in the whirlpool of capitalism and globalization. It is a large enterprise, a Taiwanese businessman, and a power. In the opinion of the teachers, it is also a sweatshop. The Foxconn phenomenon, a certain extent, can be understood as the "sweatwork factory phenomenon". As an OEM kingdom and the semi-neighbor elbow of capitalism, "How does the Taiwanese society face Taiwanese sweatshop factories?" The teacher believes that placing such reflexive expectations for the Taiwanese society has a progressive meaning, but its social process is not simple. This course is part of this "reflexive plan". To face the "sweatwork factory phenomenon", we must understand the "sweatwork factory structure". The goods we need in life are of great importance to the "sweatwork factory structure". The mobile phone is just one of the examples, such as clothes, shoes, toys, computers, daily necessities, etc., which are not as good as the preparation.
Through the free academic space provided by universities, this course will systematically introduce theoretical perspectives such as economic society, economic geography, sports society, political economy and new social movements to globalize capitalism. In the process, the historical structure of the sweatshop factory, its political economy and social contradictions, and the social/cultural practice and social foundation of the anti-sweat factory will conduct in-depth discussions to serve as the basis for the future knowledge of the class participants. We will also invite anti-sweatworks movement organizers from Taiwan-China-Hong Kong to give lectures, talks, and plan for foreign teachers in the classroom.
