Understanding English Poetry
教育目標 Course Target
1. 培養閱讀文學作品應該具有的精讀習慣
2. 了解詩人如何運用不同的的元素來傳達旨意
3. 增進閱讀, 分析, 闡釋英詩的能力
4. 擴展學生宇宙性的視野與關懷詩之為詩, 乃因它精鍊, 又深扣人心. 詩人巧妙運用詩的元素, 包括用字, 聲音, 意象, 修辭, 節拍, 韻律等等, 來傳達他的旨意. 授課教師上課第二週概括性介紹過個個元素之後, 便會在往後的每一週, 挑選最經典的短詩, 來說明每樣元素特有的巧妙效果.
詩, 小說, 戲劇乃文學之三大類型. 或寫實或虛構, 或兩者兼具. 文學家本著特有的藝術視野 “artistic vision” 將虛虛實實剪裁創作, 目的時而抒發己意, 時而反映社會人生, 時而更能呈現普世
的永恆真理, 進而拓廣讀者視野, 掌握生命價值. 同學亦可藉此培育求真、篤信、力行、及宏通的素養.
而詩與樂息息相關, 讀到富有感情或音韻之美時, 課堂上也會穿插朗讀. 學期結束前, 希望同學能踴躍朗讀出自己喜愛的一二首詩篇,(有 bonus points哦!) 同學分析與闡釋詩文, 可以增進英文閱讀能力, 更能深入體會人生; 朗讀詩歌則可訓練發音, 語流, 與情感的表達.
老師授課與討論以中文為主, 上課方式包括演講, 導讀, 同學分組討論, 最後由老師帶領全班做最後的賞析與結論.

4. Expand students’ cosmic horizons and care. Poetry is poetry because it is concise and deeply touching. The poet skillfully uses the elements of poetry, including words, sounds, images, rhetoric, rhythm, rhyme, etc., to convey his intention. After the teacher has given a general introduction to each element in the second week of class, he will select the most classic short poems in each subsequent week to illustrate the unique and ingenious effects of each element.
Poems, novels, and dramas are the three major types of literature. They may be realistic or fictional, or both. Literary writers tailor their creations with a unique artistic vision of "artistic vision". The purpose is sometimes to express their own ideas, sometimes to reflect social life, and sometimes to present the universal picture.

Poetry is closely related to music. When reading about emotional or phonological beauty, the class will also be interspersed with readings. Before the end of the semester, students are expected to enthusiastically read out one or two of their favorite poems (with bonus points!). Students analyzing and interpreting poems can improve their English reading skills and gain a deeper understanding of life; reading poems can train pronunciation, language flow, and emotional expression.
The teacher's teaching and discussion are mainly in Chinese. The class method includes lectures, introductions, group discussions, and finally the teacher leads the whole class to make final appreciation and conclusions.
