社會工作最簡單的定義是「助人的專業」，要助人，先要瞭解幫助的人。在台灣，有一些人口群特別需要幫助，我們要先認識幫助這些朋友的專業社會工作方法。社會工作是一種專業，專業需學習，更需實踐。在學習方面，從學士、碩士到博士，國內與國外的學習管道應有所認識，尤其是實習，各階段乃至課餘志工的投入，都很重要。當然，專業須持續做，才可以累積豐富的經驗。
到了第二學期，上課方式有些不同。因為社工專業基本上是源自美國，美國的教科書提供了基礎的概念與知識，所以學生應記住基本的字彙及概念，每次上課，都講解一些，並透過考試檢測學生的理解程度。此外，社工是有專業證照考試的，因此會配合證照考試的形式來評量，使學生對此專業制度的考選機制有所體認。

In the second semester, classes were conducted a little differently. Because the social work profession is basically originated from the United States, American textbooks provide basic concepts and knowledge, so students should remember the basic vocabulary and concepts, explain some of them every time in class, and test students' understanding through exams. In addition, there is a professional certification examination for social workers, so the evaluation will be based on the certification examination format so that students can have an understanding of the examination and selection mechanism of this professional system.
