一座城市如何成形？都市的建築配置與空間改變如何影響生活或旅行於其中的人？都市人的情感、意識、性別、族裔、職業、乃至活動地區、社會行為與消費模式，和其所居住的都市有何關聯？交流越來越頻繁的國際大都會，各自有何特色或性格，彼此又有何共通之處？而影像作為重要的文化生產形式之一，又如何呼應或建構城市的生活與文化？從文字、繪畫、攝影到電影，各種不同媒介所呈現的城市風貌，又有何異同處？本課程從文化研究的取向，考察都市空間與社會文化的關係，同時藉由參考並分析影像來幫助我們認識紐約、巴黎、洛杉磯、東京、香港與台北等當代國際型都市的獨特面貌，更進一步探討影像生產與城市文化相互參照與彼此建構的密切關聯。

本課程期望以活潑、富批判意識的方式，以性別、地景、圖像與(動態)影像等主題，選讀相關參考書籍，探討都市這個微型社會的空間政治與文化論述等議題。本課程也透過各種動靜態影像的賞析，探討影像生產與城市空間的認知與體驗之間的辯證關係，並藉以培養人文關懷與反思。

How does a city take shape? How do urban architectural configurations and spatial changes affect the people who live or travel in them? How are the emotions, consciousness, gender, ethnicity, occupation, and even activity areas, social behaviors and consumption patterns of urbanites related to the city they live in? In these cosmopolitan cities where exchanges are becoming more and more frequent, what are the characteristics or personalities of each, and what do they have in common with each other? As one of the important forms of cultural production, how does video respond to or construct urban life and culture? From writing, painting, photography to film, what are the similarities and differences in the urban landscape presented by various media? This course examines the relationship between urban space and social culture from the perspective of cultural studies. At the same time, it helps us understand the unique features of contemporary international cities such as New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Taipei by referring to and analyzing images. It further explores the close relationship between image production and urban culture's mutual reference and mutual construction.

This course hopes to explore issues such as spatial politics and cultural discourse in the micro-society of the city by reading relevant reference books on topics such as gender, landscape, images and (moving) images in a lively and critically aware way. This course also explores the dialectical relationship between image production and the perception and experience of urban space through the appreciation of various dynamic and static images, and thereby cultivates humanistic care and reflection.
