Taught in English

A Critical-Historical view on Worldwide Context and Local

Course Target

As the name suggests, this class attempts to "flip" the thinking and perception of classroom participants. People live in daily life, and their original cognition comes from daily life, and gradually forms habits (including pre-college education: for the purpose of examination, you develop the habit of framing phenomena into standard answers. This may seem to encourage self-expression, but because things are always described with specious explanations, it actually hinders independent thinking). Is there anything wrong with common sense, common sense, or even “knowledge”? How to re-establish cognition? Is it possible to re-understand the world? How did today's world and Taiwan come to be where they are today? What's the point?

To address these, course content will draw on material with a historical feel. But different from the role of "examination subject: history", we believe that "history" is not a thing in the past or something that "has nothing to do with me"; on the contrary, today is the consequences of history, and history is in my body. Since in order to open up speculation and reorganize cognition, it is necessary to rely on a lot of discussion. We rely on common stories, movies, and documentaries that are easily overlooked because of their commonness, and use discussions to conduct contextual in-depth descriptions and re-readings. In addition to the discussion, there are also two essays on lessons learned, which are designed to allow participants to examine themselves through written expression. In a word: while reversing definitions and reconstructing possible paths of speculation, we also try to re-understand "reality" and think about the relationship between "history" and "today".

For the actual structure of the course, please refer to the interlocking themes and texts of each week. Including homicides, environmental pollution, white terror, international division of labor and oppression, human discrimination, narrow nationalism, etc. Class participants may be familiar with these materials, they may know them but have not seen them, or they may not know them at all. However, when you see an issue, can you not immediately judge what is right or wrong in the way that is common in society? Is it possible not to fall into two points? The purpose of the course is not to create another standard answer, but to reject the "rote learning" of cramming education, reject the binary perception of "either/or" in everything, and cultivate the ability to penetrate the superficial cause and effect of things to overcome misunderstandings in thinking. We need course participants to try their best to find the parts they cannot answer and shake their minds, but the ultimate goal is to return to the world around them, make the knowledge useful, reflect on themselves, and reflect on interpersonal and various relationships.

In a difficult situation without the support of departmental resources, classes are started with an hourly salary of less than 600 yuan, which is the Ministry of Education's tacit approval of the "decoupling of public and private school salaries", but the cause of conscience can be publicly criticized. For example, course takers may feel they don’t like the homework, but they don’t realize that correcting homework after class is equivalent to unpaid work. Since teachers do not hesitate to spend money, labor and emotional labor, and have no complaints or regrets, the requirements will also be strict. Please be particularly careful and do not try without sincerity. (2016/12/30)
