Taught in English
Course Target
The Ways of the World,他有系統地按照時間序列,精選了1971年以來至今的11篇文章,對於授課者來說,這本哈維的第二本個人reflection,非常有幫助。

The global financial crisis in 2008, the Occupy movement, and the vigorous occurrence of many resistance movements around the world have once again confirmed the value of Marxist theoretical thought. This course explores the dialectics between Marxism and geographical space of David Harvey, an influential contemporary theorist. Different from the previous special topic on David Harvey, this course is mainly approached from the perspective of "history of ideas", referring to the five stages of the development of Harvey's thoughts and discourses summarized by the lecturer, to explore the development, evolution, and academic concerns of Harvey's thoughts in the 50 years from the 1960s to 2016.
Writing a history of David Harvey's thoughts may be the first of its kind in China and a rare attempt abroad. Harvey's theoretical thoughts accumulated over the past 50 years are broad and profound, and can be discussed in different contexts, such as historical materialism, intellectual history and epistemology, spatial theory, global capitalism, human geography, urban theory, political philosophy, and many other aspects. The basic question of this course is, how did Harvey systematically develop his theory step by step? How did he come up with original insights? How was he influenced, inherited, and debated by those thinkers? What was the embedded knowledge-social environment and ideological geography-climate like?
Of course, such an ambitious and overestimating goal is a huge challenge for instructors who want to understand "What on earth did Harvey think? Is it such and such?" This is a roundabout and spiral exploration. Fortunately, Harvey published a new book, The Ways of the World, in 2016. He systematically selected 11 articles from 1971 to the present in chronological order. For lecturers, this second personal reflection of Harvey is very helpful. Together with David Harvey: A Critical Reader, edited by geographers Noel Castree and Derek Gregory in 2006, and Harvey's first reflection, Spaces of Capital published in 2001, and other related academic resources, conditions have been created for the course on the intellectual history of David Harvey.
This course is suitable for graduate students who are interested in Marxism, the spatial turn of social sciences, human geography, unequal development, urban issues, urban social movements, etc. The course is conducted in the form of a seminar. In addition to the lecturer's more essential lectures, students will mainly read, guide, ask questions and discuss important texts. The teaching philosophy focuses on "clear and understandable (transparency)", and the reading materials are planned according to "affordable" reading standards for graduate students.
This course is expected to have 6-10 students (ideally 8), and it will be conducted in a seminar format. Each article will be guided by one student (about 20-25 minutes), and another student will ask questions and ask two questions to the guiding students, thereby stimulating the whole class discussion. In addition to attending class lectures, asking questions, and participating in discussions, participating students are required to submit a final report of 10,000 to 15,000 words.
This course will be divided into phases according to the following planned development of Harvey's ideas, discourse intervention and book publishing, and will systematically discuss the works published during this period.
