Taught in English
Course Target
第三部分前 半以 Biopolitics: An Advanced Introduction 為依據,選讀 biopolitics 經典文獻,主 要集中在 Michel Foucault、Giorgio Agamben 及 Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri。
This course is an introductory course on "biopolitics". It does not entirely focus on Michael Foucault, but it pays relatively attention to the social aspects of biomedicine and biotechnology. Therefore, the field positioning of the course is political sociology, medical sociology, and science, technology and social studies (STS). Biopolitics (or similar concepts) is not new, but it began to gain attention in different fields at the turn of the new century (the "Human Genome Project" played an important role), and many original derivative concepts emerged. To enter this theoretical journey requires an initial guide that can serve as a preparation for advanced studies, which is the purpose of this course.
The course design is divided into four parts. The first part is empirical research inspired by the concept of biopolitics, covering different fields and topics. The purpose is to initially grasp the theoretical concepts and their application methods in the research context through empirical research cases. The second part provides a basically complete panoramic image of the conceptual history of biopolitics through the concise introduction of Biopolitics: An Advanced Introduction (Lemke, 2011). The first half of the third part is based on Biopolitics: An Advanced Introduction, with selected readings of classic biopolitics literature, mainly focusing on Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben and Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri. The second half of the third part is also based on Biopolitics: An Advanced Introduction, and selects important recent literature on original theoretical concepts derived from biopolitics. The last part is decided by the course taker, and the options include: continuing the reading of classic or important theoretical literature from the previous part, selecting reading of important theoretical or empirical research literature from 2010 to the present, reading literature discussing the relationship between biopolitics and neoliberalism, or self-selecting theoretical literature or empirical research related to one's own research interests.
Through the four-stage design of "theoretically inspired research → theoretical panoramic navigation → reading of theoretical documents (classic documents → important innovative documents) → customized themes", this course hopes to provide course participants with a theoretical panorama of "important concepts and research topics", "how to conduct theoretically inspired research and theoretical research", "important literature bibliographies (which must be reviewed if conducting related research or qualification examinations)", and "the necessary foundation for advanced research".
