Taught in English

Seminar: Gadamer’s Truth and Method (III)

Course Target

(Sein, das verstanden werden kann, ist Sprache.)

Objectives of this course:
(1) Enable students to deeply grasp the philosophical hermeneutic thoughts of Gautama through careful reading of the original texts.
(2) Guide students to reflect on the nature of language experience and consider its relationship with the humanities.
(3) Cultivate students’ ability in philosophical thinking and analysis through classroom discussions and written reports.

The content of this course is as follows: Since its publication in 1960, Hans-Georg Gadamer's "Wahrheit und Methode" (Wahrheit und Methode) can be said to have become a classic of Western philosophy. The subtitle of the book, "Grundzüge einer philosophischen Hermeneutik" (Grundzüge einer philosophischen Hermeneutik), marks the main axis of Gautama's lifelong research and the new situation he tried to create, that is, a methodological approach to the humanities that transcends traditional hermeneutics, so as to deepen hermeneutic experience to the level of ontology, thereby claiming that all understanding activities belong to the field of hermeneutics. The basic core proposition of Gautama's philosophical hermeneutics can be simply summarized and understood by his famous saying, that is: "The being that can be understood is language." (Sein, das verstanden werden kann, ist Sprache.) However, this famous saying is not easy to understand. Therefore, if we want to clearly understand the connotation of its hermeneutic theory, it is necessary to follow the development of the arguments described in "Truth and Method" step by step, so as to grasp the development of its ideas and the logic of its discussion.
The book "Truth and Method" is divided into three parts, namely (1) Exposing the problem of truth in artistic experience (Freilegung der Wahheitsfrage an der Erfahrung der Kunst), (2) Extending the problem of truth to the understanding activities in spiritual science (Ausweitung der Wahrheitsfrage auf das Verstehen in den Geisteswissenschaften), and (3) the ontological turn of hermeneutics with language as the main line (Ontologische Wendung der Hermeneutik am Leitfaden der Sprache), which deals with issues related to the three fields of art, history and language respectively. This course aims to focus on the third part of the book. It is hoped that through detailed reading and argumentation, it can guide students to think about the importance of language issues in hermeneutic experience, and to grasp the significance of the ontological turn in hermeneutics. The study of the content of this course will not only help students understand the development and debate of hermeneutics, but also serve as the basis for an integrated understanding of the entire book "Truth and Method".
