Course Target

This course is mainly planned by Mr. Wang Hongtai, associate researcher at the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica. Mr. Gao Zhenlin from the Department of Chinese and Mr. Wu Jingfang from the Department of History assist in the planning and execution. Domestic researchers in the field of Ming and Qing Dynasties will be invited in the form of lectures to give courses based on their own expertise. It is expected that the teaching content will include urban City life and culture, consumption and fashion, material culture, social economy, publishing and communication, scholar communication and activity space, literati life, garden aesthetics, religious beliefs, festival activities, women's life and literary creation, etc.; through the development of different themes, the Ming and Qing society and culture with the characteristics of the times are presented.

The Ming and Qing dynasties were a critical turning point in China's modern history, and they also laid an important foundation for our modern life. Changes in the entire social environment after the mid-Ming Dynasty have affected people's lifestyles and ways of thinking; these include changes in spiritual connotation, increasingly common social mobility, vigorous development of the market economy and consumer culture, improvements in education and literacy rates, accumulation of publishing technology and book culture, changes in aesthetic tastes, and the rise of more diverse artistic creations and entertainment activities. These drastic changes from spiritual emotions to material life also affected people's sensory experience and erotic connotation, and formed the unique and rich characteristics of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

An important significance of reviewing history is often to form a dialogue with the present. Therefore, we offer this course "Society and Culture of the Ming Dynasty" in the field of general humanities. It is presupposed that such a course is suitable for all students in the school to take. This is an interdisciplinary course. We will use various media such as historical records, literary works and artistic creations, and even architectural landscapes to lead everyone to have a glimpse of the wonderful life connotations and rich spiritual emotions of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The Ming and Qing dynasties were chosen as the starting point for the review, not only because this is the period of history that is closest to us, but also because the way of thinking and lifestyle accumulated during this period not only accumulated flourishing cultural connotations; the rise of urban culture in the Ming Dynasty and people's pursuit of life taste also subtly echoed our today's era to a certain extent.

This course will take you into various living areas of Ming and Qing society, from cities to suburbs, from women's boudoirs to men's world, from bookshops to gardens, and participate in various exciting or festival activities at that time. At the same time, you will also enter the inner world of scholars and common people in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Listen to their thoughts, emotions and life wishes; I hope to introduce the interesting life culture and life aesthetics of the Ming and Qing Dynasties to my classmates; through these courses, I can visit the historical time and space of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which may also affect the way we view our own existence in this era.
The guidance of knowledge is only the starting point of the course, but we also hope that through this course, students will have a further understanding of ancient life aesthetics, and because of these simple and easy-to-understand lectures that span various fields, they will arouse a high degree of interest in the delicate emotions, tastes and aesthetics contained in this period of history, thereby laying the foundation for students' humanistic literacy and humanistic care. This should be the educational philosophy and original teaching intention that cannot be shaken or forgotten in today's university education.
