Course Target

This course is mainly planned by Mr. Wang Dongtai, associate researcher of the Institute of History and Language of the Central Academy of Sciences. Teachers from the Chinese Department and Mr. Wu Jingfang, a teacher from the Department of History, will invite researchers from the domestic academic community in the Ming and Qing dynasties to start their own courses through lectures. The contents of the courses are planned including city City life and culture, consumption and style, material culture, social economy, publishing and publicity, scholars' communication and activity space, literati life, garden beauty, religious belief, festival activities, women's life and literary creation, etc.; through the development of different themes, the society and culture of the Ming and Qing dynasties with extremely contemporary characteristics are presented. The Ming and Qing dynasties had a key meaning in the modern history of China, and at the same time laid an important foundation for our modern life. The changes in the entire social environment since the Middle of the Ming Dynasty affected people's lifestyles and ways of thinking; these included the changes in spiritual connotations, the widespread trend of social mobility, the vigorous development of market economy and consumer culture, the improvement of education and word recognition, the accumulation of publishing technology and book culture, the change of aesthetic taste, and the rise of more diverse artistic creations and entertainment activities. These dramas that feel the physical life level from the spiritual emotions also affect people's sensory experience and the connotation of lust, and form the special and rich characteristics of the times during the Ming and Qing dynasties. An important meaning of looking back at history often lies in forming dialogue with the contemporary era, so we set up this "Ming Dynasty Society and Culture" course in the field of universal humanities, which is exactly what we have planned for students in the school to choose. This is a cross-regional course. We will bring you the wonderful life connotation and abundant spiritual emotions from historical records, literary works and artistic creations, and even architectural landscapes. Choosing the Ming and Qing dynasties as the starting point of a re-retrograde push is not only because this is the most recent history, but also because of the way of thinking and lifestyle accumulated during this period, not only the cultural connotation of flowers and the rising urban culture of the Ming Dynasty and people's pursuit of life taste are also cleverly accord with our current era to a certain extent. This class will take everyone into various living areas of the Ming and Qing societies, from cities to suburbs, from women's houses to men's world, from bookshops to gardens, and participate in various exciting or festival activities at that time, and also enter the inner world of the Ming and Qing scholars and the people, Listen to their thoughts, emotions and life’s wishes; hope to introduce the lively culture and life aesthetics of the two generations of Ming and Qing dynasties to students; through these courses, visiting the history and space of the Ming and Qing dynasties, or it may also affect the way we view our existence in this era. The introduction of knowledge is only the starting point of the course, but we hope that through this course, we can give students a further understanding of ancient life aesthetics, and to inspire high interest in the detailed emotions, tastes and beauty contained in this history due to these in-depth and clear teaching contents, across various fields, to lay the foundation for students' humanistic cultivation and humanistic concern. This is the educational philosophy and teaching original intention that college education cannot be swayed or forgotten.
