Taught in English
Course Target
5. Karl Polanyi
Course Introduction
This course is a "Literacy Construction Local Identity" course of "Red Earth College". It aims to explore the sustainable institutional mechanism of "Solidarity Economy" through the analysis and comparison of different types of cases and theoretical thinking, especially the type of solidarity economy related to solving problems in agriculture, rural areas and farmers.
This course is also an invitation and exploration: interested students are invited to experiment together with the possibility of a "problem-solving sociology" through specific cases of solidarity economy and the theoretical perspective of Karl Polanyi. The course is divided into four parts. The first part posits the solidarity economy through three theoretical articles; then discusses the following issues through three specific cases of solidarity economy (Mendragon - cooperative economy, Grameen Bank - social enterprise, cooperative house building):
1. What social problems do these economic forms solve? In what sense are these economic forms alternatives to market solutions?
2. What intended and unintended social consequences (good or bad) do these economic forms create while solving problems? Why?
3. From the perspective of the articulation of market mechanisms and non-market mechanisms, what are the sustainable mechanisms for these cases? Or, what are the (possible) reasons why they are unsustainable?
4. What professional knowledge or skills are required to operate these cases? What can sociology do?
5. What inspiration does Karl Polanyi’s theory have for understanding this type of economic form?
The third part studies Karl Polanyi's "The Great Transformation" and tries to gain inspiration for understanding the solidarity economy. The fourth part is implementation. Students taking the course are divided into groups to select other specific cases of solidarity economy related to "agriculture, rural areas and farmers" at home and abroad, and use the above issues as a framework to make case analysis reports (including class reports and written reports).
In addition to the classroom, elective students are also required to conduct "red clay experience" as a group and submit their experience experience.
Course objectives
This course expects students to have basic concrete knowledge about agricultural issues after completing this course (embodied
knowledge), have a more pragmatic understanding of “solidarity economy” and be able to examine the possibilities and limitations of different “solidarity economy types” from a broader theoretical perspective.
Course suggestions:
1. Those who are interested in "problem-solving sociology".
2. Those who are interested in "Where will Taiwan's agriculture go from here?"
3. Those who have a vision for "social enterprises" (or similar economic models).
