Course Target

Course introduction and teaching objectives: Everyone has heard the term "biotechnology", but what is biotechnology? Why is biotechnology considered another technology that can have a huge impact on human society after information technology? If so, how should we understand this new technology? How to understand the profound impact and transformation of biotechnology on human society in medicine, agriculture, environment, culture, morality, ethics, etc.? Most importantly, how should we control this highly controversial technology? How do we decide this scientific technology that can bring human hope and destruction? In the course of Biotechnology and Society, we are going to try to explore these issues. Students don’t have to worry about the profound and complex molecular biology and cultural knowledge. The focus of our learning is to master the methods and scope of different biotechnology applications, understand the possible impact of these applications on human society and the environment; think deeply about the advantages and disadvantages of biotechnology, and understand the mutual relationship between technology and society; and reflect on these profound topics, “Who is controlling technology? Who can control technology?” In learning, the design of this course is mainly based on the "case research" method, through the study and exploration of each case, to understand the different applications of biotechnology and the legal, ethical, and social implications behind it. It must be noted that "biotechnology" actually defines itself as a complex and covers many technologies and fields with extremely wide applications. After thinking, in order to facilitate learning, the teacher defined biotechnology as: "Reorganizing DNA and cells, and applying technologies such as organizational cultivation." Under this definition, there are still many cases that can be discussed. Under the limitations of time, I focus on medicine and agricultural biotechnology. Because the former has a great impact on our medical and health, it is more likely to rewrite our basic definition of "people"; the latter's products have been on the market, and the protests and discussions caused have been endless. The so-called "basic reform mission" is spreading around the world. The choice of a case is mainly based on the application of real cases, which may have a huge impact in the future. Under this principle, the cases we will explore, except for a very small number, mostly occur in advanced countries such as Europe, the United States and Japan. There are still not many cases in Taiwan. According to reports, in the development of biotechnology, Taiwan still needs to catch up and compete with advanced countries. At present, Taiwan's social circles have relatively limited research on biotechnology, and the discussions on biotechnology and society are still unfamiliar with many students in social departments. This course does not focus on fostering long and complicated theoretical arguments, but rather on the hope of creating students: how to study the social implications of biotechnology? What topics are worth paying attention to? How to explore it? The focus of student learning is to understand biotechnology cases and to cultivate the ability to think, analyze and discuss topics independently.
