Taught in English

Social Enterprise and Social Innovation in Taiwan

Course Target

The goal of this course is to enable students to:
1. Understand social innovation, social enterprise and other related concepts, and do not understand these concepts for granted, but be able to reflect on such social phenomena.
2. Practical application of relevant concepts learned in organizational sociology, economic sociology, and research methods, and propose solutions to selected issues.
3. Through group cooperation, actually form a social enterprise business proposal and present it in class.
Based on the above goals, while cultivating sociology students' caring, critical and independent thinking abilities, they also cultivate teamwork, problem solving, planning and proposal and other abilities that are helpful for career development.

Course content
This course is an academic year course and is divided into two semesters. This elective is the first semester course of the 105 academic year. In order to make it easier for students to understand the overall course design, the courses of the previous and next semesters are explained here first, and the progress of each week is explained here first.
Overall, the course is divided into two axes. One is the teaching of concepts, covering areas such as organizational theory, economic sociology, research methods, management, etc. Based on the phenomenon side of social enterprise and social innovation, appropriate concepts are selected and taught in the classroom.
In terms of conceptual content, last semester’s topics included an introduction to the concepts of social enterprise and social innovation, the use of research methods to find social needs and innovation possibilities, and an introduction to the business model analysis methods promoted by Osterwalder and others. Among them, since this course requires students to investigate social needs and make a business proposal report, I use this business model as the teaching topic. Because this model covers many concepts related to sociology and management, such as stakeholders, legitimacy, value, culture, etc., and also incorporates many analysis methods commonly used in business management, it is suitable for the needs of this course. Furthermore, its graphical representation facilitates group discussions and brainstorming, and also allows students to communicate the content of their entrepreneurial proposals concisely and quickly.
Concept explanations in the next semester will include more practical concepts such as fundraising and presentation skills, as well as various reflections on the content of this course. In terms of practical concepts, it is mainly to cooperate with the progress of students' entrepreneurial proposals. After in-depth understanding of social needs and proposing a basic business model structure in the last semester, we will begin to discuss how to maintain financial balance, how to raise funds and publish, etc. in the next semester. In terms of reflection, although terms such as social enterprise and social innovation have become the focus in recent years, I think that as a sociology student, a very important part is to reflect on various common sense and taken-for-granted ideas. Therefore, in the middle and later stages of the semester, the development of related concepts, the positive and negative criticisms that have arisen, etc. will be discussed. We hope that through this course, students will not only understand concepts such as social innovation and social enterprise, but also be able to reflect on them and form their own views and opinions.
