Taught in English

Introduction to Hermeneutics

Course Target

The objectives of this course are threefold:
1. Provide students with a basic understanding of the problem awareness of hermeneutics and its important theoretical schools.
2. Select important original classics on hermeneutics to enhance students’ ability to read philosophical classics independently.
3. Through practice, students can apply the hermeneutic theory they have learned to text reading to cultivate their ability to integrate and understand.

The content of this course is as follows:
Hermeneutics originated from the art of understanding what others have said. Although the issue of hermeneutics has appeared since ancient Greece, the development of hermeneutics was not gradually taken seriously by the philosophical community until Schleiermacher tried to establish a general theory for it. Today, hermeneutics, as a philosophical discipline that explores how to understand text, language, and even "understanding" itself, has been the focus of attention and controversy in many disciplines in the second half of the 20th century, and has become a research focus in contemporary philosophical trends.
This course is a one-semester introductory course. It aims to provide a preliminary introduction to the development of modern hermeneutic theory. It only uses four classic figures of hermeneutic thought, Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Heidegger and Gadamer, as representatives to outline their hermeneutic thoughts and the similarities and differences between them, so as to serve as the basis for students to further understand contemporary hermeneutic debates in the future.
