This course explores the history, style, and evolution of orchestration in conjunction with a selection of orchestral repertoire from early 19th- until late 20th century. Our course readings will include primary as well as secondary literature about the history and theory of orchestration, which complement our analysis of a selection of orchestral works. We will also discuss the impact of vocal music (e.g., opera, cantata, and oratorio) and chamber music (e.g., string quartet) on contemporary orchestral repertoire. This course explores the history, style, and evolution of orchestration in conjunction with a selection of orchestral repertoire from early 19th- until late 20th century.
