PERFORMANCE PRACTICE: FREE ORNAMENTATION AND CLASSICAL CADENZAS
This course extends performance practice to creating free ornamentation for solo movements of baroque works, writing and performing preludes and classical cadenzas. Adagios were considered the most challenging movements for baroque players.
A preliminary knowledge of the first semester course is assumed before students can undertake this course.
The emphasis is placed on performance, learning how to improvise in a baroque or classical manner by first following examples written by the masters and eventually gaining an ability to perform in like manner.
The sessions will include the following:
1.Improvising simple melodies.
2.Observing examples in the literature:
a.Vivaldi
b.Handel
c.J. S. Bach
d.Telemann’s Methodical Sonatas (performance of one)
3.Free ornaments to Adagios
4.Studying and performing Preludes
5.Classical cadenzas
