陳映真是一個思想型的創作者。他的創作生涯從1959年開始，至今已跨越半個世紀。他的作品以深刻的思想作底，試圖透過文學來直面這個時代及其重要問題，但又經常超越了特定的時代與地域的限制，而揭示了更深刻的、跨越地域與時代的意義。陳映真的小說創作不是「文學為了文學」所能窮盡其意義的，因為它糾結著歷史、社會與思想。閱讀陳映真創作，對開在社會學系的本課程而言，至少有一個企圖：透過小說家所提供的視角，對戰後台灣以及區域的歷史、社會與思想，展開一種具有新的敏銳度的探索。

Chen Yingzhen is an ideological creator. His creative career began in 1959 and has spanned half a century. His works are based on profound thoughts and attempt to face this era and its important issues directly through literature. However, they often transcend the limitations of a specific era and region and reveal a deeper meaning that transcends regions and eras. Chen Yingzhen's novel creation cannot exhaust its significance by "literature for literature's sake" because it is entangled with history, society and thought. Reading Chen Yingzhen’s works has at least one intention for this course in the Department of Sociology: to explore with new sensitivity the history, society and thought of post-war Taiwan and the region through the perspective provided by the novelist.
