This course offers an introduction to and survey of the music from late 18th-century to late 19th century—often known as Classical & Romantic musics. We will study major forms, genres, and styles of the music in these periods in relation to its cultural context, including major political, religious, and artistic trends.
Major reading and listening assignments come from our textbook, Burkholder/Grout/Palisca, A History of Western Music (8th edition) and the accompanying CDs and Norton anthology (7th edition). Such music resources as Grove Music Online and Naxos will supplement the CD recordings mentioned above.
