This course offers an introduction to the music from mid-Renaissance (early 16th century) to mid-Baroque (late 17th century). We will study major forms, genres, and styles of the music in these periods in relation to its cultural context, including major political, religious, and artistic trends.
Major reading and listening assignments come from our textbook, Burkholder/Grout/Palisca, A History of Western Music (8th edition) and the accompanying Norton anthology (7th edition) & CDs. Such music resources as Grove Music Online and Naxos will supplement the CD recordings mentioned above.
