有別於過去，精神疾病患者已不只是在醫院或少數家庭可見，隨著社會的變遷，精神病患愈來愈「社區化」；也因教育的普及，在學校、職場也有機會遇到精神疾病患者。修過了「精神醫學」，相信同學對於精神疾病已有基本的認識。本課程期望從帶同學了解服務對象的處境與需求，進而讓同學清楚精神醫療社會工作師所處的大環境及其角色、功能，另亦能讓同學學習到評估個人及家庭問題的能力，以能為服務對象做出適當的處遇計畫。
