This course explores the history, style, and evolution of orchestration in conjunction with a selection of orchestral repertoire. We will cover the era from Baroque until early 19th century in the autumn semester. In the spring semester, we will discuss orchestral works from mid 19th- until 21st century. Our course readings will include primary as well as secondary literature about the history and theory of orchestration, which complement our analysis of a selection of orchestral works. We will also discuss the impact of vocal music (e.g., opera, cantata, and oratorio) and chamber music (e.g., string quartet) on contemporary orchestral repertoire.
