藝術社會學的研讀有許多基礎與輔助學科務必涉獵，除了基本的社會學原理與社會學理論之外，藝術史、藝術理論及美學，更是藝術社會學不時依憑、批判與對話的學門。鑑於此項不可或缺的知識需求與難以抵擋的學術興趣，本學期的藝術社會學研究所課程，將以西方美學史作為另一基礎智識的攻讀領域。西方美學史的經典著作已有數本中譯，包含英國學者Bernard Bosanquet （鮑桑葵） 1892年的A History of Aesthetic, (《美學史》)、波蘭 學者Wtadystaw Tatarkiewicz （佛拉第斯勞‧達達基茲）分別於1962年及1967年出版的三大卷《美學史》（《古代美學》、《中世紀美學》、《近代美學史》）以及1976年《六大美學理念史》(A History of Six [aesthetic] Ideas）。或是義大利學者Benedetto Croce (克羅齊)被節譯出的《美學的歷史》，以及Gilbert, Kuhn Helmut (吉爾伯特、庫恩) 1954年的《美學史》(A History of Esthetics)等等。但不無特殊地，我們選擇了批判性較強、出版年代也較為新近(2002)的加拿大學者Ekbert Faas所撰寫The Genealogy of Aesthetics （《美學譜系學》），作為本學期攻讀的教材。E. Faas目前為加拿大多倫多約克大學人文與英語學院教授，不同於傳統美學對於精神層面的側重，Faas美學譜系學更為注重身體的審美意象 ，並以此重新批判自柏拉圖以降至後現代時期的美學理論，認為這些理論過度側重精神層面，對於身體與本能慾念則過度拒斥。

There are many basic and auxiliary subjects that must be covered in the study of art sociology. In addition to basic sociological principles and sociological theories, art history, art theory and aesthetics are the disciplines that art sociology constantly relies on, criticizes and dialogues with. In view of this indispensable knowledge demand and irresistible academic interest, this semester's Institute of Art Sociology course will take the history of Western aesthetics as another basic intellectual field. Several classic works on the history of Western aesthetics have been translated into Chinese, including British scholar Bernard Bosanquet's 1892 A History of Aesthetics, and Polish scholar Wtadystaw Tatarkiewicz. (Vladislaus Dadakis) published three volumes of "History of Aesthetics" ("Ancient Aesthetics", "Medieval Aesthetics", "History of Modern Aesthetics") in 1962 and 1967 respectively, and "A History of Six [aesthetic] Ideas" in 1976. Or the abridged translation of "The History of Aesthetics" by the Italian scholar Benedetto Croce, and the 1954 "A History of Esthetics" by Gilbert Kuhn Helmut, etc. But not without exception, we chose The Genealogy of Aesthetics ("Aesthetics Genealogy") written by the Canadian scholar Ekbert Faas, who is more critical and published relatively recently (2002), as the textbook for this semester. E. Faas is currently a professor at the School of Humanities and English at York University in Toronto, Canada. Different from traditional aesthetics' emphasis on the spiritual level, Faas's aesthetic genealogy pays more attention to the aesthetic image of the body, and uses it to re-critique aesthetic theories from Plato to the postmodern era, believing that these theories focus too much on the spiritual level and overly reject the body and instinctive desires.
