Taught in English
Seminar: Foucault’s Madness and Civilization: A History of
Course Target
This book is Foucault's doctoral thesis. The history of how people see crazy people is explored in this book. From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, madness has always appeared in the social field as an aesthetic phenomenon and a daily phenomenon. But starting in the seventeenth century, madness was confined, making it socially ostracized. By the twentieth century, madness was considered a natural phenomenon. The development of psychiatry allowed crazy people to be treated lovingly. Here, Foucault emphasizes that madness is a product of civilization. The study of this work will help to grasp Foucault's view of the "construction" of certain types of people in Western society through his study of the history of madness.
