Taught in English

Science Fiction Text and Imagined Societies

Course Target

From the cute and optimistic "Doraemon" to the harshly reflective "Blade Runner", from the indistinguishable human-machine "Ghost in the Shell" to the magnificent "Avatar", robots, replicants, aliens, and cyborgs are shining and misaligned in the cold and colorful new world, another world, and the end of the world. This is science fiction - science fiction.

Science fiction, as a text genre, is neither scientific research nor popular science education. It is for the purpose of generating a fictional society that conforms to human scientific vision in this world dominated by scientific construction. It imagines possibilities that are not possible at the moment. It is weird and surprising, and it also makes people immersed in fun, ride on the sky and the sky, and see themselves. Fantasy settings not only serve text metaphors in one direction, but through the creation of genre texts, we are now asking directly, what is it about humans as technology penetrates nature and is now shrouded in layers of cyborgs and genetic engineering? What kind of beautiful utopia or nightmare apocalypse will human society, immersed in technological manufacturing and scientific promises, create in the future?

Therefore, the purpose of this course is to focus on exploring the "relationship between science and people". From this perspective, we try to make cross-field combinations, using literary and film studies to analyze science fiction texts, and using social theory to explore social vision. The course hopes that interested participants can master the analytical framework and, through appreciation and discussion of science fiction texts, develop the ability and habit of reflection on the relationship between scientific imagination and themselves, the society in which they live, and humanity as a whole.

The course is designed into the following blocks: [Overall], [Media], [Structure], [Theme] and [Perspective], each of which is divided into 2 to 4 weeks of course content. Each week focuses on the corresponding theoretical literature and selected text and audio-visual texts. Please refer to the teaching progress for details of each week's content.

Please pay attention! Due to time constraints, only a very small amount of texts can be quoted (read aloud and played) in class, whether in lectures or presentations by classmates. Therefore, when preparing for class, in addition to studying theoretical literature, students should also read selected science fiction texts in advance to facilitate listening and learning in class.

Course objectives may also be listed as follows:
1. Through studying selected texts and audio-visual creations, get in touch with the genre of science fiction texts and learn analysis and research methods.
2. Cooperate with the study and discussion of literature, think about the relationship between science and people, and the comparison between science fiction and society, in order to reflect on yourself.

General courses are different from professional courses. They actually focus on guiding students to actively care for, explore and practice the ultimate value and wisdom of mankind. At the same time, the knowledge provided by general courses is not the superficiality of professional courses, but basic knowledge with a solid sense. Based on the school’s founding tradition, school motto and school philosophy, the school has formulated four basic qualities for general education: truth-seeking quality, belief quality, practical quality and general quality, in order to concretely implement the school’s ideals of general education. We hope that our students can develop their independent learning spirit and gradually develop their basic literacy in general education under the guidance of general education teachers, and look forward to lifelong learning. Various basic competencies have specific learning effectiveness indicators for self-examination of teaching and learning effectiveness, which are described as follows: Truth-seeking literacy (natural field): 1. Learn the methods or philosophy of natural science to explore the subtleties of the physical and life world, 2. Use the spirit of discussing things as they are, 3. Be able to participate in public affairs related to scientific issues. Belief literacy (humanities field): 1. Learn the humanistic spirit to explore the inner self and understand the deep value of human civilization, 2. Develop a spirit of self-discipline, 3. Be able to use reason for moral reasoning. Practical literacy (social field): 1. Use social science methods or philosophy to stimulate students' listening and communication skills, 2. Recognize and respect diversity, 3. Practice the spirit of democratic deliberation. Hongtong literacy (cross-field): 1. Pursue the overall value of human beings, 2. Integrate qualities such as truth-seeking, faith, and practice into personal life. Courses in various fields can choose from different learning outcome indicators, so there is no need to be rigid.
