The Gothic Tradition
教育目標 Course Target
1. Students will attempt to define the Gothic Tradition as part of literature and culture and will trace a genealogy of the Gothic Tradition from the 18th century novel to contemporary literature, film and digital culture.
2. Students will study the Gothic Tradition within the historical, social, and philosophical contexts of the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Victorian period, Modernism and Postmodernism.
3. Students will examine a wide range of gothic texts aimed at adults and at young adults from different periods within the Gothic Tradition.
4. Students will be introduced to different aspects of gothic texts and will learn to critically analyze these aspects using the proper terminology.
5. Critical theory related to gothic texts will be covered and students will apply this theory to books and extracts they have read.
6. Students will independently research a topic within the Gothic Tradition and present their findings to the class.
7. Students will write regular journals in which they reflect critically on their reading of Gothic texts.
8. Students will present a Gothic text or Gothic author of their choice to the class.

This seminar aims to provide an overview of the Gothic Tradition from its beginnings in the 1750s to the present day. The course will focus on definitions, literary characteristics, themes, settings, historical and social contexts, etc. A range of Gothic literary tropes, such as live burial, hidden manuscripts, ghosts, hysteria, family secrets, ruined buildings and bodies, sexual danger and incest, the undead (vampires), imprisonment, etc., will be introduced. A selection of representative texts (novels, short stories, poetry, film, TV programs, etc.) from different periods in the Gothic Tradition will be read and analyzed. These texts will be discussed together with the historical and socio-cultural contexts which produced them. Critical texts on the Gothic Tradition will be studied to help understanding of this literary tradition. Shelley, Mary (1818; 2010) Frankenstein, London: Collins Classics.
