Students should develop awareness that in order to understand a foreigner, one should first examine thoroughly one’s own culture. To do so they will have to be able to distinguish which criteria are important to introduce their own culture to the foreigner. Thirdly, they will realize that any judgment about a foreigner culture has first to be questioned as why and how it works. Furthermore they will have to realize that any encounter with a foreigner is first of all meeting an individual not a passport.

When individuals coming from Western cultures come to live in Taiwan or in China they encounter many difficulties. Among them, the most complex to deal with are rooted in culture. It is true as well for Taiwanese and Chinese people going to a Western country. In this innovative course, I will teach all students the main features of socializing in a Chinese oriented culture like face, networking, social values, social representations, etc. Then students will work in group sharing their understanding of their native culture and the nature of the problem they are facing when they interact with their foreign counterpart. They will be asked to make a report about their finding and then the theoretical aspect of the course will be examined in the light of their own conclusion.
