讓學生了解科學研究步驟中重要環節--研究設計之實際做法與重要性Let students understand the important link in the steps of scientific research-the actual practice and importance of research design
Course Description:
Research is a process of formulating questions, problems, or hypotheses; collecting data or evidence relevant to these questions/problems/or hypotheses; and analyzing or interpreting these data. Independent thinking is a key component in your development as an excellent researcher. Only part of this development is accomplished in your preparation of a thesis/dissertation. Successful grant writing requires a certain degree of critical thinking, independent thinking, and last but not least, organization. The purpose of this course is to assist you in this development. It covers the entire research process including: formulating research questions; sampling (probability and nonprobability); measurement (surveys, scaling, qualitative, unobtrusive); research design (survey and experiment); data analysis; and, writing the research paper. It also addresses the major theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of research including: the idea of validity in research; reliability of measures; and ethics. There are some useful ways to generate research hypothesis including: (1) proving an intuitive impression, (2) putting other people’s theories to test, (3)reexamining other people’s conclusion, (4) repeating or modifying a previous study, (5) focusing on a detailed of a large study and combining it with another question, (6) use of a calibrated psychological tests, and (7) serendipitous discoveries.
Course Objectives:
We have three specific aims:
to provide an overview of research design and methodology
to analyze the data for statistical description, inferences, and interpretation
to introduce statistical computing techniques (SAS/SPSS/MINITAB/EXCEL)
Contents of Teaching:
Part I—Introduction
 Problem setting
 Literatures collection & review
 Exploring environments via the Internet
※ Writing skills
Part II—Data Collection & Design
 Qualitative data
 Quantitative data
Primary Data Collection – Sampling survey
