Seminar: Bioethical Reflections on Animal Rights

Course Target

Animal rights are an important issue in contemporary bioethics. Its basic point of view is to break away from human-centered thinking and think from the rights of animals themselves, arguing that animals should not be property or tools attached to humans, but should have their status equal to humans and enjoy the same freedom from torture and suffering as humans. basic rights. The goal of this course is to guide students to think about animal rights issues from different perspectives of Eastern and Western philosophy. In the Western Philosophy section, the rise and development of the Western concept of animal rights will first be introduced, and then issues related to animal rights and bioethics will be discussed in depth, such as "What are animals?" and "What is the moral status of animals?" , "Equality and Animal Rights", "Value of Life and Slaughter", "Cultivation of Animals - Controversy between Eating Meat and Vegetarians", "Scientific Research and Animals" and other issues. In the Eastern philosophy part, this course will first start with the Buddhist "world view" to guide students to reflect on the existence status of humans and animals, and further reflect on speciesism and animal ethics. Furthermore, it takes the concept of Buddhist deep ecology as the main axis and examines issues such as ecological balance, animal experimentation and animal release from the concept of "do no harm". Finally, issues such as the moral status of animals, the review of animal rights, and the choice between vegetarianism and meat are comprehensively discussed. It is hoped that through the discussion of animal rights issues in Eastern and Western philosophy, students can be guided to develop the ability and quality of critical reflection from contemporary philosophical issues.
