理解後現代，直探其本質，誠屬不智，因為後現代一詞所指涉的內容與涵義從來
就不曾取得共識。後現代陣營的內在不一致性源自於這個概念的前綴詞「後」（post-
）。就知識發展史來看，大凡以「後」為名的新生概念，如「後工業社會」（Post
Industrial Society ） 、「後馬克思主義」（Postmarxismus ） 、「後殖民主義」
（Postkolonialismus ） 、「後女性主義」（Postfeminismus ） 、「後唯物論」
（Postmaterialismus）、「後結構主義」（Poststruktualismus）等等，無可避免地處於
眾聲喧嘩，紛雜異質的處境，因為「後－現代」既名之為「後」，意謂著作為現代性
的後果。這個後果並不只是徵別時間序列「在ＸＸ之後」的先後劃分，也就是不應當
將「後」視為尾隨「ＸＸ」之後的一個階段，當然也未必取代了前一個階段。反而，
「後」的出現應當視為對前一個階段的質疑、挑戰，甚至反對、否定、拒絕、放棄。
「後－ＸＸ」往往與「ＸＸ」並存，如果「ＸＸ」是以受中心支配，向中心靠攏的收
斂方式運作，那麼，「後－ＸＸ」則是與「ＸＸ」離譜走調的生勢開展，因而對「Ｘ
Ｘ」而言，「後－ＸＸ」的性格是向外開放發散的，是烽火四起，狼煙處處的緊張關
