《紅樓夢》是中國古典長篇小說的經典之作，是一部值得驕傲的文學遺產；同時，它已被翻譯成十幾種外國語文，因此也是世界文學的遺產之一。在中國近百年來有超過三百以上的詩人作家學者對它做過評論或深入的研究，因而在半個世紀以前已發展成一門學問─「紅學」。１９８０年６月更首次由美國威斯康辛大學召開「國際紅樓夢研討會」，聚集了歐美及海峽兩岸三地的學者做廣泛的交流研討。從此，每兩年就有一次國際大型的研討會在大陸不同地點舉行。再者，《紅樓夢》作者曹雪芹的身世特殊，做為滿州「包衣」，曾有顯赫的家世，而又遭逢抄家之禍，更引發「曹學」的研究。因此，環繞著《紅樓夢》文本中「大觀園」的內外世界也普遍引起知識界的文化論述。就文學與思想的視角，它文字哀怨優美，對人生有哲理的省識，是一部愛情悲劇與世族興衰的經典巨著，可以做為文學賞析的最佳材料。歷年來，有關專著與論文已成百上千，更是做為中文系學生所不可忽視者。開這一門課的目的與重點，就是為了啟發學生拓展從「點」到「面」的視野。"A Dream of Red Mansions" is a classic of Chinese classical novels and a literary heritage worth being proud of. At the same time, it has been translated into more than a dozen foreign languages, so it is also one of the heritages of world literature. In China, more than 300 poets, writers and scholars have commented on or conducted in-depth research on it in the past hundred years. As a result, it has developed into a science - "Redology" half a century ago. In June 1980, the University of Wisconsin held the "International Symposium on Dream of Red Mansions" for the first time, bringing together scholars from Europe, the United States and across the Taiwan Straits for extensive exchanges and discussions. Since then, a large-scale international seminar has been held in different locations on the mainland every two years. Furthermore, Cao Xueqin, the author of "A Dream of Red Mansions", had a special life experience. As a Manchu "coat", he once had a prominent family background, but he suffered from the confiscation of his family, which triggered the study of "Cao Studies". Therefore, the internal and external world surrounding the "Grand View Garden" in the text of "A Dream of Red Mansions" has also generally aroused cultural discussions in the intellectual circles. From the perspective of literature and thought, its writing is sad and beautiful, and it has a philosophical reflection on life. It is a classic masterpiece about the tragedy of love and the rise and fall of a family, and can be used as the best material for literary appreciation. Over the years, there have been hundreds of relevant monographs and papers, and it is something that students of the Chinese Department cannot ignore. The purpose and focus of this course is to inspire students to expand their horizons from "point" to "face".
